Our GREAT STATE OF LOUISIANA was recently named “State of the Year” by Business Facilities Magazine!
To determine the winner, Business Facilities reviews each state’s top five projects in terms of overall investment and job creation. The magazine also evaluates the state’s execution of its economic development strategy, and the diversity and growth potential of its target industries. Lake Charles and the Southwest Louisiana Region is no stranger to economic development.
Economic Outlook for Southwest Louisiana is optimistic with new projects within our economy. The petrochemical plants are being turnarounds and maintenance work which will employ many from various trades and crafts. Lake Charles’ strength includes it’s petro-chemical industries, the Port of Lake Charles, and it’s growing stature in the United States’ biggest hub for importation of Liquified National Gas (LNG). Shaw-Westinghouse is building a $100 million nuclear modular manufacturing plant in South Lake Charles which will employ 1400 people locally.
This is a great honor for Louisiana which has really been focusing on economic growth.
Governor Bobby Jindal stated after learning of this honor, “This is yet another example of the better Louisiana we are building for our children…Since day one, we have made economic development our top priority by cutting taxes, revamping workforce training and reforming our ethics code. We’ve made incredible progress and fostered an economic environment that is creating opportunity for our people, but we will not rest until all of our sons and daughters can pursue their dreams right here at home. We must continue this strong economic momentum by opposing tax increases on Louisianians and reducing government spending so we can retain jobs and create thousands more for our people.”
In a related press release from Louisiana Economic Development it was reported that Louisiana ranked best in the U.S. on a per-capita basis in Site Selection magazine’s “Governor’s Cup” rankings. “This ranking is yet another example of our state’s strong economic momentum and shows why it’s critical to keep taxes low and invest in workforce development programs,” said Gov. Jindal. “By any reasonable measure, Louisiana’s economy has outperformed the South and the U.S. since the beginning of the national recession, and we’re just getting started. We’re going to continue to aggressively pursue business investment for our state so that our sons and daughters can raise their families and pursue their careers right here in Louisiana.”Lake Charles ranked first among metropolitan areas with populations between 50,000 and 200,000,
The Business Facilities editor noted that Louisiana “has emerged unbowed from a series of disasters that would have brought less-determined locations to their knees — including a major hurricane, an oil spill and the national economic downturn — and charted a course for the future that positions the state to be a national leader for years to come.”
