Sasol Chemical Complex Expansion is Good News for Calcasieu Parish and Southwest LA

In a press release earlier today, Governor Bobby Jindal and Sasol New Business Development Managing Director Ernst Oberholster announced the South African company has selected Calcasieu Parish as the location for a potential gas-to-liquids (GTL) complex

Sasol has selected Calcasieu Parish as the location for a potential gas to liquid complex bringing an estimated 8-10 billion in revenue.  Currently the expansion is a feasibility study and Sasol’s GTL complex would be the first of its kind built in the United States.  If all proceeds as planned, construction is expected to start in 2013 and the complex would be built in two phases with final completion in 2018.

The Sasol GTL complex would create 850 direct jobs with average salaries of about $89,000.  4,000 indirect jobs would be associated with the project, so the total impact would be nearly 5,000 jobs for Southwest Louisiana!

This is good news for Southwest Louisiana.   Sasol considered several other states before selection Louisiana as its preferred location in the U.S.  The Sasol Chemical Complex expansion will not only create jobs for Southwest Louisiana residents, this industry expansion will stimulate the economy of Calcasieu Parish.  More jobs and good salaries will also stimulate Lake Charles Real Estate. The creation of 850 jobs will likely bring new residents to Southwest Louisiana and Lake Charles.  Relocation with industry is something that is not uncommon here in Calcasieu Parish.

“Louisiana has proven to be a place where research and next-generation technologies can thrive and grow,” said Ernst Oberholster, managing director, Sasol New Business Development. “We believe Sasol’s GTL technology can help unlock the potential of Louisiana’s abundant natural gas resources and contribute to an affordable, reliable fuel supply for the United States. We look forward to continuing to work with the people of Louisiana to make a long-term and sustainable contribution to the state.”

The Sasol  Lake Charles Chemical Complex in Westlake  currently employess  400.  The Sasol Westlake facility is located next to the Westlake Louisiana  ConocoPhillips petroleum refinery.

The Lake Charles Sasol Chemical Complex previously announced construction of a $175 million ethylene tetramerization unit in December, and that project is under way.
