The Rebuilding of Shiver me Timbers Millennium Park by the Lake Charles community and corporate volunteers is complete!
Lake Charles residents were shocked and saddened to awake to the news on a Sunday morning January 9, 2011 that Millennium Park had been destroyed by an arson fire.
Lake Charles residents quickly responded in outrage wanting to rebuild Millennium Park. Many Lake Charles residents shared happy memories of taking their children to the park and the loss of such a wonderful Lake Charles attraction. The City of Lake Charles, businesses and volunteers unified a task force to rebuild Millennium Park -Shiver Me Timbers Park in Lake Charles.
A vision of the park with focal points and and giant Pirate Ship was incorporated in the new park design
Features of the new park include climbing nets, cargo nets, slides, tunnels, ladders, suspension bridges and a treehouse!
Over 5,000 volunteers came together on October 26, 2011 and worked on teams and individually to build the park bigger and better. Not only did volunteers contribute their time to build, but also there were contributions of artists with creativity. Lake Charles Artists took great care in bringing the crabs, crawfish and alligators to life and making them fun.
Before our very eyes volunteers and work crews brought Millennium Park back to life in a short amount of time.
Just before Christmas on December 23, 2011 with the help of Mayor Roach and Santa Clause, Millenneum Park re-opened for children to play once again! Now that is what I call an early gift!
Once again the laughter of children can be heard as they climb and play within the park with many new features that includes a rubberized surface enhancing the safety of the park.
When the park re-opened on December 23rd, I dropped by the park to witness the excitement and check out the new features for myself!
CHECK OUT THE PIRATE SHIP!
NOW THIS IS WHAT I CALL A TREEHOUSE!
Children 12 and under now have a great place to play and are in a heaven of 20,000 stimulating sq ft of activity!
Those who volunteered got to be part of something very special and worthwhile and this example of community coming together is just another example of why Lake Charles residents are proud to call Southwest Louisiana home.
