When selling real estate in and around Lake Charles, Louisiana I am often asked about the schools.

T.S. Cooley Magnet School in Lake Charles  was recently named 2012 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

A new 55,000 sq. ft. Lake Charles Charter School facility for Kindergarten-8th grade has opened and is operated independently by the Lake Charles Charter School Foundation.

Built near the Power Center Parkway this new charter school is an option for Calcasieu Parish students.  The Lake Charles Charter School  offers a gifted program, special needs program and a program for average students.

Lake Charles Charter Academy Foundation Board President Judge Gene Thibodeaux said  “the current charter school, Lake Charles Charter Academy, has proved to be a success and now it’s time to open another charter school in the area to allow more students to have the opportunity to attend a charter school. “

The second charter school, The Southwest Louisiana Charter Academy houses kindergarten through sixth grades and eventually will bring seventh and eighth grade after its first few years.

Episcopal Day School (EDS) announced on February 28, 2012 the school will expand with a South Campus on Big Lake Road near the Graywood Community in Lake Charles.  The project is just in the planning stages with no ground breaking date yet.  The school recently acquired property and hope to start work soon.

Episcopal Day School announced that the south EDS campus will include a high school as well as sixth through eighth grade, which is currently at their  EDS chose south Lake Charles due to space needed and the environment the piece of property displays.  Once construction is completed, the plans are to move the middle school grades to the south campus.

A.M. Barbe High School is the high school for the South Lake Charles district A.M. Barbe High School often referred to as “Barbe” for short, is located at the end of W. McNeese Street and Weaver Road in Lake Charles.

Barbe is the home of the Buccaneers or BUCS (as we know locally.)

Students are offered many programs and student life organizations are plentiful. For more information you will want to visit the website of the Calcaiseu Parish School Board.

Barbe is known for excelling in ALL aspects of athletics with state of the art facilities. The most well known landmarks are the Barbe Baseball Field and The Barbe Footballstadium, where many BUC championships have been won! The Barbe Baseball program is one of the Nation’s Top 10 Baseball programs of the decade.  The BUCS were 2008 National Champions of the Nike Sparq Challenge.

There is nothing like Friday Night Football and Barbe is always a contender for the 5-A team division.  The “BUCS” have enjoyed the status of being awarded All District champs over several years and  when football season rolls around Lake Charles fans flock to the stadium to cheer the BUCS on to victory!

Because of the convenient vicinity to nearby subdivisions the Barbe track also attracts many Lake Charles Residents who enjoy walking/running in the evening or on weekends.
