What is Wrong With The AC Thermostat

Its everyone’s worst nightmare when the AC goes out in the summer! We have had record days of 90 degrees and its only May.  Here are some tips I learned the hard way, after our AC quit cooling:

You should never drastically drop the temp setting (example going from 72-62) This puts a strain on your system and it wont cool down quickly.  Your AC system is set up to be balanced air flow throughout the sq ft of your home.  So if you are working around the house and you get hot, dropping the temp to the 60’s wont get the result you are looking for, it will take a few hours to cool the entire house to that temperature.  This scenario just happened to me at my own home.

Our cleaning crew decided to drop the temp setting because they were hot and the result was the thermostat became stuck and froze so when that happened no cool air was circulating the system was stuck also!

See what the AC professional had to say about how that works:

As we continue into our summer months, its a good time to get your AC inspected to make sure everything is running smoothly.  The repair guys get super busy this time of year so being pro-active to trouble shoot is a good idea. I also learned today that we did not have a float switch on our AC handler!  After living in our home for 12 years we were just told this.  Float switches come up a lot in home inspections, they are a good preventive measure to keep the drip pan from overflowing and coming through your ceiling.

Practice good habits of changing your filter regularly and resist the urge to drop that temp button down, if you have to do it, try it in increments.  Don’t just keep pushing the button and expect it to automatically change to the 60’s!
